DAVID BAILEY FROM JOHNSTOWN INVOLVED IN SEXUAL OFFENSES IN CARMARTHEN

In October 2012, a serious case involving David Bailey, a resident of Johnstown, came to light when he admitted to attempting to engage in sexual activity with a girl under the age of 16. The incident unfolded after the two exchanged a substantial number of text messages—approximately 1,200 in total—many of which contained explicit and sexual content.

According to court proceedings held in Carmarthen, the situation escalated after Bailey and the young girl shared a kiss. Following this, Bailey sent her a message on her mobile phone that read: "I know today is weird. It feels wrong..." The court was informed that Bailey had also requested nude photographs from the girl, but she refused to comply with this request.

The case was brought to police attention after the girl confided in her friends about the messages and the incident. Her friends, in turn, informed her mother, which led to Bailey's arrest. Bailey, aged 29 at the time, appeared before magistrates in Carmarthen on a Wednesday, where he pleaded guilty to charges of arranging sexual activity with a minor and physically touching a girl under 16.

Prosecutor Ellie Morgan detailed the nature of the exchanges, stating that Bailey and the girl had discussed what they would do if they were alone together. Morgan emphasized that the girl was frightened by the content of these messages. The court also heard that the two shared a passionate kiss, during which Bailey touched her breast and also grabbed her bottom, actions that were described as inappropriate and invasive.

During police interviews, Bailey claimed he was too weak to resist the situation and suggested that the girl had wanted the contact. He also admitted to asking her for naked pictures, fully aware that she would refuse. Morgan highlighted that Bailey had expressed concern that the girl might reveal what had transpired.

Bailey’s defense lawyer, Mike Reed, pointed out that his client had no prior criminal record and had shown remorse by pleading guilty at the earliest opportunity. Reed explained that Bailey, who was employed in the financial sector, was experiencing depression at the time due to the breakdown of his marriage earlier that year. He added that Bailey had suffered from depression since his teenage years.

Reed also clarified that both parties were fully clothed during the incident. The case was adjourned for sentencing, with magistrates deciding to transfer the case to Swansea Crown Court, which has greater sentencing powers. Bailey is scheduled to appear there on November 2. Until then, he has been released on bail under strict conditions, including a prohibition from approaching witnesses or any children under 16, and an obligation to cooperate with the Probation Service to prepare a pre-sentence report.
