DARREN ILES FROM MIDSOMER NORTON SENTENCED TO 3 YEARS FOR SEXUAL OFFENCES IN BRISTOL
In a case that has shocked the community of Midsomer Norton and the wider Bristol area, Darren Iles, a 44-year-old man, has been convicted and sentenced for a series of heinous sexual offences committed against young girls. The sentencing took place at Bristol Crown Court on December 8, 2011, where Iles was handed a custodial term of three years in prison. Additionally, he was ordered to sign the Sex Offenders Register indefinitely, a measure aimed at monitoring and managing his conduct upon release. These offences, some of which date back to the year 2000, include a range of serious crimes such as indecent assault on a girl under the age of 14, sexual assault, engaging in sexual activity in the presence of a child aged between 13 and 15, and acts of gross indecency. Despite the gravity of these allegations, Iles maintained his innocence by pleading not guilty, leading to a trial that scrutinized the evidence against him.
Following the sentencing, Detective Inspector Mike Williams of the Bath and North East Somerset Police Public Protection Unit expressed his satisfaction with the outcome. He stated, “I am pleased with the verdicts and sentence passed today, which I hope provides the victims with some closure and allows them to move on with their lives, knowing that Iles will serve a custodial sentence for the crimes committed against them.”
Inspector Williams also emphasized the importance of community safety and ongoing management of offenders. “My thoughts are with the victims of this investigation, who showed courage and bravery to give evidence against a manipulative sexual predator. I hope they rest assured that when Iles is released from prison, he will be managed in the community by the police as a Registered Sex Offender and will be required to comply with the conditions of a Sexual Offences Prevention Order, both of which are designed to reduce the risk of reoffending.”
He further urged anyone who might have been a victim, whether in the past or present, to come forward and seek support. “We have specially trained staff ready to listen and assist, and we encourage victims to speak out so that they can receive the help they need.”
Judge Julian Lambert, who presided over the case, delivered a stern judgment during sentencing. He remarked, “You abused your position of trust by grooming these girls for your sexual purposes. The fact that you did not go further than you did differentiates your offending only from the most serious cases. Your sexualisation of young girls has robbed them of part of their childhood. They were made to feel thoroughly uncomfortable at the very least, and often more frightened by your actions.”
The judge concluded, “You have spoiled, at least in part, the childhoods of four girls. Your offending is so grave that fines and community sentences are insufficient to address the severity of your crimes.”
