DARREN DIXON FROM BOSBURY ESCAPES JAIL DESPITE DOWNLOADING OVER 1,000 CHILD PORN IMAGES IN HEREFORDSHIRE
In a case that has shocked the local community of Bosbury and the wider Herefordshire area, Darren Dixon, aged 35, was handed a lenient sentence after being found in possession of a significant collection of illegal child pornography. The incident came to light in January 2019 when police officers, acting on intelligence, conducted a search of Dixon’s residence and seized his mobile phones.During the investigation, authorities discovered that Dixon had downloaded and stored a total of 323 images classified as Category A, which are considered the most severe due to their explicit and disturbing content involving children. Among these images was a particularly heinous photograph depicting a 12-month-old baby being raped. In addition to the Category A images, the police found 300 pictures and one video categorized as B, along with 723 images classified as C, which generally depict naked children without explicit sexual activity.
The police report indicated that Dixon’s internet search history was equally disturbing, containing terms such as “incest,” “pre-teen children,” and “young teen,” suggesting premeditated intent and a focus on illegal content involving minors. The investigation revealed that these illegal activities spanned over a period of approximately 17 months, highlighting a sustained pattern of offending.
Prosecutor Peter Arnold outlined the severity of the case, emphasizing that the images included some of the most disturbing material involving very young children. Despite the gravity of the offenses, Dixon admitted to the charges and pleaded guilty to three counts of making indecent images of children. The court was informed that Dixon had taken steps to address his behavior, including immediately acknowledging his actions when police raided his home.
At Worcester Crown Court, Judge Martin Jackson considered the circumstances carefully. While acknowledging the seriousness of the crimes, the judge noted that Dixon posed a low risk to the public and had shown some willingness to rehabilitate. As a result, he was spared a custodial sentence and was instead sentenced to a three-year community order. This order requires Dixon to cooperate with probation services, complete up to 30 days of rehabilitation activities, and perform 180 hours of unpaid work.
Furthermore, Dixon was placed under a five-year sexual harm prevention order, which restricts his internet usage to prevent further offending. The judge clarified that this order would not prohibit him from living with or having unsupervised contact with children under 16, considering the specifics of his case. Dixon had already registered as a sex offender at an earlier court hearing, and he was ordered to pay a statutory surcharge and prosecution costs. His two mobile phones, which contained the illegal images, are to be destroyed.
Overall, the case underscores the ongoing efforts of law enforcement to combat online child exploitation, while also highlighting the importance of tailored sentencing that considers both the severity of the offense and the potential for rehabilitation.
