DARREN CAMPBELL FROM PLYMOUTH SENTENCED TO 12 YEARS FOR HORRIFIC SEXUAL ABUSE OF YOUNG GIRL
In a deeply disturbing case that has shocked the community of Plymouth, Darren Campbell, aged 41, of Treverbyn Road, Plympton, was sentenced to a total of 12 years in prison for a series of heinous sexual offenses committed against a young girl.The court proceedings revealed a pattern of abuse that spanned over a decade, during which Campbell subjected the victim to multiple acts of rape, indecent assault, and other sexual misconduct.
Campbell pleaded guilty to six counts of rape, five counts of indecent assault, six counts of indecency with a child, and three counts of inciting a child to commit an act of gross indecency.
The charges detailed a prolonged period of abuse, with the prosecutor, David Gittins, explaining that the assaults occurred regularly over ten years, beginning when the girl was very young and continuing into her teenage years.
The court heard that Campbell had forced the girl to perform numerous sexual acts, some of which were described as too graphic for publication.
He reportedly became aggressive and threatening whenever she attempted to resist or refuse his demands.

Gittins further disclosed that the most serious of the charges involved assaults that took place over a five-year span, with the victim being subjected to these acts between 20 and 30 times.
During the hearing, Campbell was observed sitting with his head bowed, visibly distressed, sniffing, and wiping tears from his eyes.
It was also revealed that he had forced the girl to watch pornography on his computer, adding to the trauma inflicted upon her.
The victim, who cannot be named for legal reasons, described her experience as having 'ruined her childhood,' a statement that underscored the profound impact of Campbell’s actions.
In his own defense, Campbell described his conduct as 'sick,' and his legal representative, Nick Lewin, argued that his client was 'utterly disgusted' with himself, expressing 'obvious remorse' and 'genuine shame' for his actions.
During the sentencing, Judge Francis Gilbert, QC, acknowledged Campbell’s guilty plea and noted that he had no prior convictions.
The judge also observed that Campbell’s demeanor in court—hanging his head in shame—was understandable given the gravity of his crimes.
In delivering the sentence, Judge Gilbert emphasized the severity of the offenses.
He pointed out that Campbell had initially appeared to be a loving and kind individual, but beneath that facade, he had committed some of the most dreadful abuses imaginable.
The court sentenced Campbell to 12 years for the rape counts, six years for indecent assault, six years for indecency with a child, and six years for inciting a child to commit gross indecency.
All sentences were to run concurrently, resulting in a total term of 12 years, minus 72 days already served on remand.
Additionally, Campbell was ordered to be placed on the Sexual Offences Register for life.
Following the sentencing, Detective Constable Tracey Webb, the lead investigator in the case, expressed her condemnation of Campbell’s actions.
She stated, 'There is no sentence long enough for what Campbell’s victim has gone through.
What she suffered and will continue to suffer for the rest of her life is not minimised one bit by any jail term he will serve.' The case has left a lasting scar on the community of Plymouth, highlighting the devastating effects of such abuse and the importance of justice for victims of sexual violence.
