Hitchin Child Abuser
Daniel Wemyss, a man from Hitchin, Hertfordshire, has been sentenced for violently shaking a 21-month-old boy and discouraging medical help. The court detailed that Wemyss chose not to reveal what he had done, despite the child suffering internal injuries that needed surgery. He was convicted of causing grievous bodily harm and child cruelty. The judge sentenced him to nine years in prison, followed by an extended three-year period. Court proceedings revealed that Wemyss caused bruises to the child's face, then shook him three days later. The child's condition worsened, leading to a 111 call, and he was transferred to hospitals for specialized care. The judge highlighted that "The outcome could have been fatal" because Wemyss shook the boy when his head was unsupported, and he did not suggest seeking medical help or disclose his actions. He also prevented intervention to hide his involvement, believing the child's symptoms were a natural illness. The court emphasized that Wemyss did nothing for over 36 hours, worsening the boy's injuries and health, which could have resulted in death.
