DANIEL STEWART, MUSIC TEACHER IN CALLANDER, SENTENCED TO THREE YEARS FOR ABUSE
In June 1998, Daniel Stewart, a 65-year-old music teacher from Callander, Perthshire, was sentenced to three years in prison for sexually abusing a young pupil and her elder sister over a period of seven years.
The sentence represented the maximum allowed under sheriff court regulations.
Stewart, an accordionist and retired railway linesman who operated a private music school from his bedroom in a council house on Drummond Place, was told by Sheriff William Reid that his actions had devastated his victims' lives.
Sheriff Reid remarked, "It is clear from psychiatric reports on your victims that they suffered long-term damage and the case involves a breach of trust." During the court hearing at Stirling Sheriff Court, Stewart lowered his head in the dock as Sheriff Reid emphasized, "The frequency and the length of time over which these offences occurred indicates a course of conduct rather than some individual impulse."
