DANIEL DOS REMEDIOS FROM REMEDIOS SENTENCED FOR CHILD SEXUAL ABUSE IN WOKING

In November 2016, a disturbing case unfolded involving the sexual abuse of a young girl by an elderly man from the town of Woking. The perpetrator, Daniel Dos-Remedios, aged 75 and residing on Bridge Barn Lane in Woking, was found guilty of a series of heinous offenses committed over a span of three years. These offenses inflicted what the court described as 'unfixable damage' on the victim, highlighting the severity and long-lasting impact of his actions.

Dos-Remedios was charged with multiple counts of sexual assault involving a female under the age of 13, as well as inciting a girl under 13 to engage in sexual activity. On October 21, he pleaded guilty to three counts of sexual assault and one count of incitement. The charges stemmed from a pattern of abuse that the prosecution characterized as 'specimen' offenses, indicating that the exact number of incidents could not be precisely determined, but the nature of the crimes was clear and egregious.

On Friday, November 18, at Guildford Crown Court, Judge Robert Fraser sentenced Dos-Remedios to a total of three years in prison for his crimes. The judge emphasized that the sentence was mandatory, given the gravity of the offenses and the fact that the defendant had entered a guilty plea early in the process. Judge Fraser remarked that the systematic nature of the abuse was evident, and the fact that the victim was only able to disclose the full extent of the abuse when she was much older underscored the profound and lasting harm inflicted upon her.

He stated, “It is quite clear you systematically abused her, the specimen nature of the abuses also underline that fact. She was only able, and this is so tragically often the case in these situations, to tell her mother when she was much older. The damage you caused her is unfixable now.”

In addition to the custodial sentence, Dos-Remedios was subjected to a sexual harm prevention order, which restricts his activities and contact with minors. He was also placed on the sex offenders register and prohibited from engaging in any unauthorized activity involving individuals under the age of 18.

During mitigation, defense lawyer Joanna Staples highlighted her client’s previously clean record and the positive character references he had received. She suggested that his offending might have been influenced by past abuse he suffered as a child, which he admitted during the investigation. Staples argued that Dos-Remedios had shown remorse, noting that he fully accepted the evidence presented against him and even disclosed additional information that had not been initially revealed.

“Your honour may think that he has illustrated a great deal of remorse for his actions by the fact that as soon as he was presented with the evidence by the authorities, he not only fully accepted the contents of that evidence but went on to disclose other evidence that had not been disclosed,” she explained.

She further added, “He had no need to inform the authorities, it was fully in the spirit of full and frank disclosure that he told them. Moreover, the fact that he told them that he gained sexual gratification, something he would have had no need to inform them of. It is in that vein I seek to persuade you, your honour, that there may be some scope here to avoid an immediate custodial sentence.”

Prosecutor Alexander Williams provided a detailed account of the harm caused to the young victim. He described how the girl recounted four separate instances of abuse, some of which occurred repeatedly. The victim expressed feelings of fear and confusion, revealing that she lied about her emotions to hide what was happening. She felt compelled to keep her suffering secret, believing that no one could see what she was hiding, which added to her trauma and sense of isolation.

Overall, the case underscores the devastating impact of child sexual abuse and the importance of justice for victims. Daniel Dos-Remedios’s sentencing reflects the court’s recognition of the severity of his crimes and the lasting damage inflicted upon his young victim in Woking.
