DAN JONES OF VALE OF GLAMORGAN SENTENCED FOR BRUTAL ANIMAL CRUELTY IN BARRY

Daniel Bradley Jones, a resident of Flat 6, Ty Gwenfo, Northcote Terrace in Barry, located within the Vale of Glamorgan, has been convicted of heinous acts of animal cruelty that resulted in the tragic death of one of his kittens. Born around 1997, Jones's actions have shocked the local community and prompted a serious legal response.

In September 2023, Jones brought his pet cat, Maisey, to a veterinary clinic claiming that he had accidentally stepped on her at home. He explained to the veterinarian that Maisey had been crying and making paddling motions with her legs, suggesting an accidental injury. Unfortunately, upon examination, the vet discovered that Maisey was already deceased. The veterinarian noted signs of significant trauma consistent with being trodden on or stamped with considerable force. The injuries included chest trauma, bruising to her jaw, protrusion of her left eye, and blood in her mouth. X-ray scans revealed fractures to her shoulder blade, a broken rib, and a collapsed lung on her left side, indicating severe physical abuse.

Jones's cruelty did not end with Maisey. In November 2023, he took another cat, Odin, to the same veterinary clinic. Jones claimed that Odin had run into an Xbox console placed on a shelf three days earlier, later stating that the Xbox was on the floor. The vet found Odin soaking wet and suffering from hypothermia, with injuries including head and spinal trauma, and signs of pain. The cat was also in a state of distress, prompting concern over the circumstances of his injuries. Jones admitted to bathing both cats, despite veterinary advice against it, as they had been exhibiting nervous behavior when held.

Further veterinary assessments revealed that the injuries sustained by both Maisey and Odin were inconsistent with Jones's explanations. An expert in veterinary medicine concluded that the injuries were caused by physical abuse. Maisey's fatal lung collapse and respiratory failure were attributed to her chest trauma and fractured rib, which ultimately led to her death.

Following a thorough investigation, Jones pleaded guilty to three offences under the Animal Welfare Act. The case was prosecuted by the RSPCA, culminating in a sentencing hearing held on February 25, 2025. During the court proceedings, mitigation was presented suggesting that Jones was suffering from mental health issues linked to cannabis use.

RSPCA inspector Miranda Albinson commented on the case, stating, “Both of these kittens were presented at the vets on numerous occasions with different injuries caused whilst in the care of Jones and no doubt inflicted by Jones. Maisie unfortunately lost her life as a result of the abuse she suffered but due to the concerns of the veterinary practice Odin (who has since been rehomed) was protected from further harm. These were two young and vulnerable kittens who relied on Jones to care for them. This type of abuse will always be investigated and justice will be sought to prevent further animals being harmed.”

As a result of his conviction, Jones was sentenced to 40 weeks in jail. He was also ordered to pay a victim surcharge of £187. Additionally, he received a five-year ban on keeping any pets, a restriction that will remain in effect until February 2030. The case underscores the ongoing efforts of animal welfare organizations to combat cruelty and protect vulnerable animals in the Vale of Glamorgan and Barry areas.
