TRAWDEN MAN SENTENCED FOR ATTACKING EX-PARTNER AND DAMAGING PROPERTY
A father of two named Craig Spencer, aged 37, was accused of attacking his ex-partner and smashing her mobile phone. The incident occurred after he turned up at her home while intoxicated and watering the garden.
Spencer, who was living with another woman despite their separation, had exercised psychological control over the victim, Julie Whittam, and acted as if they were still together.
Miss Whittam returned from visiting her sister when she found Spencer at her house.
He had cut all the phone wires in the house and then grabbed her by the neck, which left her extremely scared and distressed.
Spencer admitted to assault by beating and damage on August 11.
The court ordered he must not contact the victim or go within 100 metres of her home at Clogg Head, Trawden.
Spencer was bailed until October 10 for a pre-sentence report.
The court was told that Spencer and the victim had been together for 20 years, but their relationship had become increasingly difficult, especially around alcohol consumption, leading to violent and irrational behavior from Spencer.
Despite their separation, he continued to exercise control and blame her for the relationship problems.
