COREY PARKER, 27, JAILED FOR STRANGLING GIRLFRIEND AND DAMAGING PROPERTY
A man named Corey Parker, aged 27, was involved in a domestic assault incident in Rhydyfelin. He became angry during an argument about money with his girlfriend and proceeded to strangle her, grabbing her by the throat and squeezing for five to six seconds, which left her unable to breathe.
During the incident, he also threw a small table at a television set, smashing it.
Parker took the victim's mobile phone and threatened to sell it so she wouldn't be able to call the police.
The victim attempted to leave the house by packing a bag, but Parker pushed her onto a settee.
Subsequently, he pushed her onto the settee again, and when she tried to distance herself, he picked up a small table and threw it, causing the glass to shatter on the floor.
The victim managed to escape to a neighbor's house, and police were called.
Parker left the scene after taking a bottle of vodka and was later arrested at his mother's residence.
The victim showed no visible injuries but noticed bruising and redness on her neck developing over two weeks.
Parker pleaded guilty to charges of intentional strangulation, theft, and criminal damage.
He was found to have ten previous convictions for violent offenses including battery, criminal damage, and assaulting an emergency worker.
The court heard a letter read on his behalf, where Parker expressed remorse, citing a difficult childhood, including losing his father early and struggles with schooling, but noted he had gained employment and had a job offer.
Judge Rhys Rowlands sentenced him to 18 months in prison and imposed a restraining order for four years.
