2014: QUINTON TEACHER JAILED AFTER BREACHING ORDER OVER RELATIONSHIP WITH SCHOOLGIRL
A teacher from a discredited school who later traveled to Africa in violation of a court order related to an incident involving a 16-year-old schoolgirl has been sentenced to nine months in prison.Judge John Warner stated to Conrad Abenaty, “It was a clear and intentional decision on your part to ignore the law,” after he lost the opportunity to maintain his freedom.
Abenaty was initially sentenced to a three-year Community Order and was required to register as a Sex Offender with several strict conditions due to his misconduct involving the student.
Despite complying initially, he missed two meetings with his supervisor and subsequently left the UK to serve as the deputy headmaster at a school in Cameroon.
Defense lawyer Mr.
Simon Hunka emphasized that Abenaty was not a serial offender but had been involved in a single inappropriate act, and described him as an intelligent and highly educated man who had made numerous unsuccessful job applications since his court appearance.
When given the chance to work in Cameroon, he seized the opportunity but the arrangement ultimately failed.
Mr.
Hunka added that Abenaty was extremely unhappy with his situation at home and believed his decision to leave was a mistake, ignoring advice from authorities.
Upon his return to the UK, Abenaty sought employment 38 additional times without success, leaving him feeling very despondent.
The court heard that Abenaty, residing on Hagley Road West, admitted to three breaches of his court order, which was then revoked, leading to the imprisonment.
The judge confirmed that Abenaty had violated the order by leaving the country when explicitly instructed not to, and he was accordingly sentenced to jail.
