ELDERLY MAN JAILED FOR VIOLENCE AND SEXUAL ABUSE OF YOUNG GIRLS
A man named Colin Roberts, aged 76, was sentenced to five years in prison after being found guilty of subjecting two young girls to violence and sexual abuse over three decades ago.The incidents took place at a residence in a Highland village.
During the court hearing, Judge Norman McFadyen condemned Roberts’ treatment of the victims, stating he had treated them 'cruelly'.
The judge detailed that Roberts had subjected both victims to 'deeply unpleasant violence,' and remarked that his violence had 'something of a casual ring to it.' He further highlighted that Roberts had also engaged in sexual misconduct from a young age, specifically abusing one of the girls from when she was four years old and exposing himself to her.
The court heard that Roberts threatened and physically assaulted one girl, including lifting her and throwing her across a room, hitting her head on a table, and exposing himself on one occasion.
Roberts initially denied the charges but was convicted after a four-day trial of two counts of assault and two counts of indecent conduct, committed between 1976 and 1987.
The judge noted that Roberts had no prior offending history and had remained free of any further offences, describing him as a person of good character with stable employment.
Nonetheless, Roberts was placed on the sex offenders’ register indefinitely.
