COLIN BURKE FROM CWMFELINFACH SENTENCED FOR SEXUAL OFFENSES AGAINST YOUNG GIRL IN CARDIFF
In a case that has shocked the community of Cwmfelinfach and the wider Cardiff area, Colin Burke, aged 50, was sentenced to imprisonment after being found guilty of multiple serious sexual offenses involving a young girl. The incident, which took place in February 2019, has left a lasting impact on the victim, who is still suffering from the emotional and psychological scars inflicted by Burke's predatory actions.Cardiff Crown Court heard detailed accounts of the abuse, revealing that Burke had engaged in nine counts of sexual activity with the girl, who was a minor at the time, and had also incited her to participate in sexual acts. The court was presented with a victim impact statement, read aloud by prosecutor Gareth James, which painted a harrowing picture of the lasting trauma experienced by the young girl.
The girl described feeling as if “a ton of bricks had been lifted” when she finally found the courage to speak out about her ordeal. She recounted experiencing frequent flashbacks, which cause her to feel scared and anxious, especially at the thought of encountering Burke again. She expressed her fears of bumping into him and detailed how her nights are plagued by nightmares. Her statement conveyed a deep sense of loss, stating, “I feel like he has taken away my childhood,” and expressed relief that Burke had pleaded guilty, acknowledging that his actions were wrong.
Colin Burke, who resides on King Street in Cwmfelinfach, admitted to the charges against him. His defense lawyer, Matthew Roberts, argued in mitigation that Burke was distressed about his situation and suffers from depression and anxiety, which he claimed should be taken into account during sentencing.
However, Judge Niclas Parry emphasized the gravity of the case, condemning Burke for his grooming behavior and the profound psychological harm caused to the victim. The judge described the case as being of “particular gravity” and highlighted the severe impact on the girl’s mental health.
As a result, Burke was sentenced to three years and four months in prison. The court also ordered that he be registered as a sex offender for life and imposed a sexual harm prevention order to restrict his future conduct. Additionally, Burke will be required to pay a victim surcharge upon his release from custody, ensuring some measure of accountability for his actions.
