COLIN ASH FROM SMITH SENTENCED TO LIFE FOR KILLING CLAIRE TILTMAN IN GREENHITHE

In a case that has spanned nearly two decades, Colin Ash, a man with a disturbing history of violence and known locally as a dangerous predator, has been convicted of the brutal murder of 16-year-old Claire Tiltman in Greenhithe, Kent. The tragic incident occurred in January 1993, when Claire was on her way to visit a friend, and her life was violently taken in a dark alleyway off London Road.

On that cold winter evening, Claire, a student at Dartford Grammar School for Girls, left her home in Woodward Terrace, Horns Cross, shortly after 6 pm, just four days after celebrating her 16th birthday. She intended to walk less than a mile to her friend's house in Riverview Road. However, her journey was tragically interrupted when Colin Ash, a known sex offender and serial attacker, intercepted her just before 6:30 pm after she took a detour to buy cigarettes from a shop off Knockhall Chase.

What followed was a frenzied, relentless attack. Claire was stabbed more than 40 times, suffering wounds up to 15 centimeters deep. Despite her desperate attempts to escape, she collapsed on the pavement, where passersby tried to save her life, but she succumbed to her injuries. The attack was described by prosecutors as a ruthless, predatory act carried out with no apparent motive other than the killer’s warped desire for power and control.

At the time of the murder, Colin Ash, then 24 and living with his parents in Milton Street, Swanscombe, was known for his violent tendencies. He had previously attempted to murder and rape a woman in 1988, leaving her for dead in a Swanscombe quarry after forcing her at knifepoint and attempting to strangle her. He was convicted in December 1996 and sentenced to life imprisonment with a minimum term of 15 years for that attack. Despite his violent past, Ash was free at the time of Claire’s murder, thanks to a false alibi claiming he was leafleting with his mother, Diane Ash-Smith, a former Labour councillor and later mayor of Swanscombe.

Police investigations into Claire’s death initially yielded no evidence linking Ash to the crime. However, a cold case review, coupled with a change in law allowing juries to hear about a defendant’s previous convictions and bad character, proved pivotal. In February of this year, Ash was charged and subsequently convicted after a seven-member jury took just three and a half hours to reach a unanimous verdict. Throughout the trial, Ash showed no emotion and refused to return to the courtroom after impact statements from Claire’s family and friends were read.

During the trial, the court learned of Ash’s extensive history of violence and obsession. He kept a collection of 20 to 30 knives, including commando and flick knives, and wrote detailed “assault plans,” describing attacks he considered “masterpieces,” with one attack rated at 95% success. His notes revealed plans for other attacks, including stalking women at Swanscombe train station and breaking into a woman’s home armed with a knife, intending to sexually assault her. Ash also boasted about being called the “Swanscombe Psycho” by friends and even pretended to attack his girlfriend shortly after Claire’s murder to gauge if anyone noticed.

Furthermore, Ash admitted to a confession made while in Wakefield Prison between 2001 and 2003, where he told a fellow inmate that he had “snapped and attacked” someone on a zebra crossing—an admission that the court linked directly to Claire’s murder, as she was the only victim who used a zebra crossing that evening.

Throughout the trial, the court heard about Ash’s previous violent crimes, including the 1988 attack on a woman in Swanscombe, where he forced her at knifepoint into a quarry, and the 1995 attack on Charlotte Barnard, a 21-year-old woman in Greenhithe, who he stabbed 14 times. Police found a fragment of the tie he used to strangle his 1988 victim in his Ford Capri after his arrest, and his own notes detailed multiple attack plans, some of which he abandoned or failed.

Claire’s parents, Lin and Cliff Tiltman, both passed away before seeing justice served. Lin died of oesophageal cancer in 2008, and Cliff succumbed to inoperable tumors in 2012. Their daughter’s friends, who had supported the campaign for justice, attended the trial and expressed their grief and anger at the prolonged delay in bringing her killer to justice. The court also heard impact statements from Claire’s friends and family, emphasizing the devastating effect her loss had on their lives.

Judge Mr. Justice Sweeney, in delivering the sentence, emphasized the profound grief caused to Claire’s family and the irreparable loss of her promising young life. He noted that, under the law at the time of the murder, Ash was to serve a minimum of 21 years before being considered for parole, though had the crime occurred after the 2003 law change, the minimum would have been 30 years. The judge condemned Ash’s previous convictions as aggravating factors, with no mitigating circumstances present.

As Ash-Smith was led away from the court, he refused to show any remorse. The judge commended the police and Claire’s family for their dignity throughout the proceedings and expressed his sorrow for the burden they had borne for many years. The case remains a stark reminder of the dangers posed by a man with a long history of violence and predatory behavior, and the importance of relentless police work in seeking justice for victims like Claire Tiltman.
