Ulceby Rapist
In December 2011, Clive Smith, a level crossing keeper based in Ulceby, Lincolnshire, was sentenced to 16 months in prison after being found guilty of possessing an extensive collection of child pornography. The investigation revealed that Smith had downloaded nearly 50,000 images depicting the sexual abuse of children, some as young as two years old. These disturbing images were discovered at his residence, which is situated adjacent to the level crossing he managed in Ulceby.
Detective Constable Graham Lindley of Lincolnshire Police described the collection as one of the most horrific he had encountered in his career. The images were stored among a vast array of disks, filling a room from floor to ceiling at Smith’s home. The sheer volume of material underscored the severity of the case and the depravity involved.
Prosecutor Phil Howes stated that police officers arrived at Smith’s home in January and that Smith immediately confessed to downloading child pornography. During the police interview, Smith revealed that he had downloaded more than 60 hours of video clips related to the abuse. He expressed a sense of helplessness, saying, “I just could not stop. I can get it, so I get it.”
Clive Smith, aged 54 and residing on Carr Lane in Ulceby, faced multiple charges, including five counts of making indecent images of children, possession of 49,103 such images, and an additional charge related to possession of extreme pornography. On January 20, he pleaded guilty to all charges.
Judge Sean Morris sentenced Smith to 16 months in prison and ordered him to be placed on the sex offenders’ register for ten years. In his remarks, the judge emphasized the gravity of the crimes, stating, “These are not victimless crimes. Children are being raped to satisfy the perversions of those who enjoy watching this material. An experienced police officer says that this is one of the worst cases he has ever seen. I cannot overlook this.”
Defense lawyer David Stanton highlighted that Smith had no prior convictions and warned that a custodial sentence would result in the loss of his job and home. Stanton added, “He takes the view that a man of his age with this conviction will never find work again,” underscoring the devastating personal consequences Smith faces following his guilty plea.
