In a tragic case that has shocked the community of Mitcham, a couple has been found guilty in connection with the death of their four-week-old daughter, Eva Sanders. The incident, which occurred in September 2017, involved a series of brutal assaults that ultimately led to the infant's death, and has since garnered significant media attention and legal scrutiny.

Clare Sanders, aged 44, and Tomas Vaitkevicius, aged 45, faced charges related to the death of their young child. Initially accused of murder, the couple's case was brought before the Old Bailey for a retrial. During the proceedings, jurors heard harrowing details about the injuries sustained by baby Eva, including 27 fractured ribs, as well as injuries to her head and spine. These injuries were determined to have resulted from three separate episodes of violent shaking, which the prosecution argued were deliberate assaults on the defenseless infant.

Following the retrial, the jury acquitted Sanders and Vaitkevicius of the charge of murder. However, they found both defendants guilty of causing or allowing the death of a child, a lesser but still serious conviction. Judge Mark Lucraft QC ordered that both individuals be remanded into custody, with sentencing scheduled for November 27.
