SCIENCE GRADUATE CHRISTOPHER WHEATLEY FROM COVEN SENTENCED FOR CHILD ABUSE IMAGE OFFENSES IN STAFFORD

In July 2015, a disturbing case emerged involving Christopher Wheatley, a science graduate residing in Coven, who was found to have an alarming addiction to indecent images of children. Despite the severity of his actions, Wheatley was spared a custodial sentence, though he faced significant legal consequences.

Stafford Crown Court heard that Wheatley, aged 24, had been engaging in the online collection of illicit images, which he described as a 'dark secret' that had spiraled out of control. The court was informed that Wheatley used specific search terms such as 'jailbait' to locate and accumulate a collection exceeding 300 indecent photographs and videos depicting children. The investigation revealed that among these images, 113 were classified as Category A, indicating the most severe level of abuse.

The police action that uncovered Wheatley's activities involved a raid on his residence in Penkside Close, Coven. During the search, authorities seized his computer, which contained the illicit material. Prosecutor Mr. Paul Farrow explained that Wheatley had been utilizing file-sharing platforms, including Limewire, to access these images. When questioned by investigators, Wheatley admitted that he had been searching for images of young girls, aged as young as five or six, and confessed that viewing such material was sexually arousing to him.

Wheatley faced six charges related to the making and possession of indecent images of children. In court, he pleaded guilty to these charges and was subsequently sentenced to a three-year community order. As part of his punishment, he was ordered to participate in a sex offender treatment program and was mandated to register as a sex offender for the next five years.

Judge Mark Eades addressed Wheatley directly, emphasizing the gravity of his conduct. He stated, “You have to recognize your conduct hitherto has been simply not acceptable.” The judge also remarked on the nature of Wheatley's addiction, noting, “It started at the age of 15 and snowballed until you became entirely in the grip of that addiction,” highlighting the long-term and escalating nature of his problem.

Defense lawyer Mr. Oliver King described Wheatley as a man of previously good character, a university graduate in science, and someone who held a good job. King expressed hope that Wheatley could retain his employment if given the opportunity to remain free. He also pointed out the personal toll the case had taken on Wheatley's life, mentioning that Wheatley's partner had recently given birth, but due to his criminal record, he was not permitted to live with her and only had supervised contact with his child.
