CHRISTOPHER STEAD BANNED FROM WORKING WITH CHILDREN IN GRAVESEND AFTER SEXUAL OFFENCES

In July 2018, Christopher Stead, a resident of Gravesend, found himself at the center of a serious legal case involving the possession and distribution of child abuse images.

The case drew significant attention due to the disturbing nature of the material he was found to have downloaded and viewed.

Stead, a 30-year-old former employee of Network Rail, had accumulated over 400,000 images and videos depicting children being sexually abused, some of which included distressing scenes such as a young girl crying and a baby possibly struggling during an assault.

Despite his initial arrest and the discovery of this extensive collection, Stead was not immediately sentenced to prison.

Instead, in November 2017, Maidstone Crown Court handed down a sentence of 12 months imprisonment, suspended for two years.

The court also imposed several conditions, including the requirement for Stead to attend a sex offenders’ rehabilitation program, complete 150 hours of unpaid community service, and adhere to a tagged curfew from 8 pm to 5:30 am for four months.

Additionally, he was ordered to register as a sex offender and was barred from working with children or vulnerable adults.

At the time of sentencing, it was revealed that Stead had not disclosed his offences to his employer and was on annual leave when he appeared in court.

The police investigation was initiated after authorities received information that an indecent video of a child had been uploaded online.

When law enforcement officers visited his residence in The Poplars, Gravesend, they seized his electronic devices, including a laptop, tablet, and various storage media such as SD cards, USB sticks, and a mobile phone.

These devices contained a vast collection of indecent images, with the total number reaching approximately 422,000, including around 14,000 videos.

During questioning, Stead admitted to using chatrooms where links led to the images and videos, describing his viewing habits as involving “all sorts” of content.

He also faced specific charges related to three “specimen” cases involving 3,500 images and videos of varying severity, including extreme material involving animals.

His initial denial of knowledge about the videos was later contradicted by the evidence seized from his devices.

In January 2018, police conducted further checks and discovered that Stead was in possession of additional electronic items, such as a hard drive, SIM cards, and a USB stick, which he had not previously disclosed.

The prosecution highlighted that Stead was subject to a Sexual Harm Prevention Order (SHPO), which he knowingly breached.

Prosecutor Oliver Dunkin emphasized that the breach was serious, given the restrictions imposed by the SHPO and the importance of monitoring his activities.

Judge Julian Smith addressed Stead directly, stating, “You knew full well the situation and to that extent the breach is a serious one.

The concern the police had about you remains and is real.” The judge considered activating the suspended sentence but ultimately decided to maintain the existing order, emphasizing that further breaches would likely lead to the activation of the original sentence.

Stead was fined £140, payable at a rate of £10 per week, as part of the court’s penalty.

Throughout the proceedings, the case underscored the ongoing risks posed by individuals like Stead, who, despite legal restrictions, continued to possess and view illegal material.

The court’s decisions reflected a balance between punishment, rehabilitation, and the need to protect the community from potential harm.
