SHARPETHORNE MAN CHRISTOPHER HARTFIELD CAUGHT BY PAEDOPHILE HUNTERS AT HOVE TRAIN STATION

In March 2017, a disturbing case involving Christopher Hartfield, a 41-year-old resident of Sharpethorne, unfolded outside Hove train station in East Sussex. Hartfield was confronted by a vigilante group known as The Hunted One, which specializes in exposing individuals involved in online grooming and child exploitation. The incident highlighted the dangers of online predators and the efforts of community-led initiatives to combat such crimes.

Hartfield had been engaging in a covert online chat with someone he believed to be a 14-year-old girl named Hayley. Over the course of several weeks, he exchanged explicit photographs of himself and discussed sexual acts, ultimately arranging to meet the girl in person. Unbeknownst to him, the person he was communicating with was not a teenage girl but a grown man impersonating her, a deception orchestrated by the vigilante group to catch potential offenders.

When Hartfield arrived at Hove train station, he was immediately confronted by members of the group. During the encounter, he attempted to deflect responsibility by claiming that his young son could have been responsible for the messages. Hartfield explained that he suffers from ADHD and that his son often gets hold of his mobile phone, which he suggested might explain some of the messages sent from his number. A video recording of the confrontation shows Hartfield asserting, “Yeah but my son even plays with my phone.”

The vigilante group, which operates a website called The Hunted One, subjected Hartfield to a detailed ten-minute interrogation. They presented evidence that contradicted his claims, including messages indicating that the girl was 14, not 18 as Hartfield had previously believed. The group expressed their outrage over his actions, emphasizing the vile nature of his comments and the lengths he went to in order to meet the supposed girl.

Following the confrontation, Hartfield was taken into police custody. His case was subsequently brought before Brighton Crown Court, where he pleaded guilty to charges of inciting a girl aged between 13 and 15 to engage in sexual activity and grooming her. Despite the serious nature of his offenses, Hartfield was handed an 18-month prison sentence, which was suspended for two years, allowing him to avoid immediate incarceration.

The vigilante group issued a statement explaining their motivations and the importance of their work. They described Hartfield as a “very twisted man” whose vile comments and manipulative behavior warranted intervention. They also condemned his attempt to shift blame onto his young son, emphasizing their commitment to protecting children and raising awareness about online dangers. The group highlighted their ongoing efforts to monitor and expose predators, stressing the importance of community involvement in safeguarding vulnerable individuals.

This case underscores the persistent threat posed by online predators and the vital role played by vigilant community groups in preventing child exploitation. It also raises questions about the responsibilities of parents and guardians in monitoring digital activity, especially for children who may inadvertently become involved in dangerous situations. As the legal proceedings continue, authorities remain committed to pursuing justice and ensuring that offenders like Hartfield are held accountable for their actions.
