CHRISTOPHER GARRETT FROM FLEETWOOD SENTENCED AFTER YOUTH SEXUAL ALLEGATION AT FLEETWOOD TOWN FC

In a case that has shocked the local community of Fleetwood, Christopher Garrett, a 46-year-old football coach, has been convicted and sentenced following serious allegations of inappropriate conduct involving a minor. Garrett, who resided on Lower Lune Street, was employed by Fleetwood Town FC as a community development officer, a role that involved organizing youth football activities and coaching during school holidays.

The incident in question occurred on August 26, during a period when Garrett was working closely with young players. It was alleged that Garrett approached a young boy and, in exchange for a cigarette, asked him to perform a sexual act. The court heard that Garrett offered the cigarette as a form of inducement, and when the boy refused, Garrett dismissed the offer as a joke and threw a cigarette at him. This interaction took place in Garrett’s office, raising concerns about the environment in which the youth activities were being conducted.

The young victim later confided in a friend about the incident, prompting the victim's family to contact the police. The case was brought before Preston Crown Court earlier this year, where Garrett faced two charges of causing or inciting a male child under 16 to engage in sexual activity. During the trial, Garrett denied the charges, claiming that no physical offence had taken place and that his actions were merely jokes.

Despite his denial, the court found him guilty of one of the charges. Judge Heather Lloyd described the case as “distressing” for the victim and emphasized the seriousness of the misconduct. On Monday, Garrett was sentenced to a 12-month jail term, which was suspended for two years, meaning he would not serve time unless he committed another offence within that period.

Furthermore, Garrett was disqualified from working with children, a decision that reflects the court’s concern for the safety and well-being of minors in his future employment. Additionally, he was ordered to register as a sex offender for the next ten years, a measure intended to monitor and prevent any further inappropriate conduct.

Kevin Donnelly, Garrett’s defense lawyer, stated during the proceedings that “no physical offence took place,” attempting to mitigate the severity of the charges. Nonetheless, the court’s verdict underscores the importance of safeguarding children from exploitation and abuse, especially in environments meant to foster their development and enjoyment of sports and recreation.
