Evesham Rapist
In a disturbing case that has shocked the community, former police officer Christopher Cuthbertson from Evesham has been sentenced to 13 years in prison for a series of heinous crimes involving the attempted sexual exploitation of minors. The offences came to light after Cuthbertson engaged in online communications with an undercover police officer, whom he believed was a 12-year-old boy named ‘Sam’.
On Thursday, March 7, at Worcester Crown Court, Cuthbertson, aged 42, pleaded guilty to 11 charges, including possessing and distributing indecent images of children. The court was told that the defendant’s actions were part of a broader pattern of predatory behavior, with evidence revealing multiple attempts to arrange meetings with real children, some as young as five years old.
The court heard that Cuthbertson, who resided on Crump Way in Evesham, was arrested on December 22, 2018, at Strensham Services, a well-known motorway service station near Worcester. His arrest followed a period of online communication that began on December 11, during which he unwittingly interacted with an undercover officer operating under the username ‘UK Lad’.
During these exchanges, Cuthbertson sent explicit images, including one of a six-year-old child in shorts exposing his genitals, and a photo of an erect adult penis he believed would be shown to ‘Sam’. He also shared a screenshot of a hotel booking in Tewkesbury and inquired whether he needed to wear a condom, indicating his intent to engage in sexual activity with the minor.
Further messages revealed that Cuthbertson was willing to involve a “trustworthy” friend in the planned abuse and discussed plausible excuses to give the boy’s mother for his absence. As the date of the supposed meeting approached, Cuthbertson asked whether ‘Sam’ was looking forward to having sex and made comments suggesting that some children are aware of what they want and are willing to do anything for sex.
When police officers apprehended him at the designated meeting point, located on the north side of the service station, they confiscated his phone and discovered a black bag in his vehicle containing sex toys, clothing, condoms, and lubricant. During police interviews, Cuthbertson initially denied any intent to have sex, claiming he was there to intercept and protect the child. However, once presented with the evidence, he admitted to the offences.
Analysis of his phone revealed eight additional charges, including attempts to meet real children aged between five and 15, and possession of extreme pornographic images depicting mutilation and animal sex. The investigation also uncovered communications with another online persona, ‘Boy Fleet’, who claimed to have access to boys aged five, nine, and eleven, and sent images of children being raped. Cuthbertson exchanged a total of 75 messages with this individual, including one where he expressed a desire to meet boys in London and asked about costs and protection.
He also engaged in conversations with a 14-year-old boy from Hammersmith, London, inviting him to a “male sex orgy” scheduled for December 22, and offered to cover travel and hotel expenses. When the teenager hesitated, Cuthbertson attempted to persuade him. Additionally, he communicated with another 15-year-old boy, suggesting they meet in January and asking if he knew other young boys who might be interested.
The police found on Cuthbertson’s phone numerous images of extreme pornography, including depictions of mutilated genitals and bestiality. The court’s judgment was severe; Judge Richard Griffith-Jones sentenced him to a total of 13 years in prison. Furthermore, Cuthbertson was subjected to an indefinite sexual harm prevention order, his mobile phone was ordered to be confiscated and destroyed, and he was mandated to register as a sex offender indefinitely. The case has left a lasting impact on the community of Evesham and the wider Worcestershire area, highlighting the ongoing threat posed by individuals with predatory tendencies hiding behind seemingly respectable facades.
