CHRISTOPHER COSGROVE FROM CO MAYO AND SLIGO SENTENCED FOR SEX ABUSE IN SLIGO
In a high-profile case that has shocked the communities of Co Mayo and Sligo, Christopher Cosgrove, a man with deep ties to both regions, has been sentenced to eight years in prison for a series of heinous sexual offenses.The crimes, which spanned over a decade, involved the abuse of six young boys at St John’s National School in Sligo during the 1960s and 1970s.
Cosgrove, who resided on Ballyhaunis Road in Claremorris, Co Mayo, was known during his time as a Marist brother, where he taught under the name Brother Christopher.
Despite his role as an educator and religious figure, he engaged in a pattern of predatory behavior that left lasting scars on his victims.
Throughout the trial, Cosgrove maintained a plea of not guilty, denying the allegations against him.
The case was heard at Sligo Circuit Court, where Judge Anthony Kennedy presided over five days of intense and detailed proceedings.
