COVENTRY EX-SOCIAL WORKER CONVICTED OF CHILD SEXUAL ABUSE
A former Coventry social worker named Christopher Chick, aged 56, has been convicted of sexually abusing two boys in his care. The incident occurred while Chick was in charge of a motorcycle project for teenage boys in the city.
Chick was found guilty of two counts of indecent assault and has been ordered to register as a sex offender with the police.
The court, Birmingham Crown Court, cleared Chick of four counts of rape and a third count of indecent assault, but he was convicted on the indecent assault charges.
The judge, Estelle Hindley, QC, adjourned sentencing for further reports, warning Chick that these offenses, although not the worst, involved a breach of trust and they will be treated seriously.
Chick was granted bail pending sentencing.
Following the verdict, Coventry Social Services expressed satisfaction with the outcome and appreciated one of the victims for coming forward to ensure justice.
Chick had been suspended in November 1998 after allegations surfaced and was dismissed in August 1999 for gross misconduct after video evidence and other proof during disciplinary proceedings.
Detective Andy McCord from West Midlands Police described Chick as a predatory paedophile who exploited his position to abuse vulnerable children.
One of Chick’s victims, now aged 25, recounted the devastating effects of the abuse, which included difficulty relaxing with friends and partners, rebellious behavior, substance abuse, broken relationships, and a suicide attempt.
The victim expressed hope of moving forward and living in the present.
