WOMAN SENTENCED AFTER ADMITTING TO LEAVING DOG TO STARVE IN EMPTY HOUSE
On May 19 in Coventry, magistrates sentenced Christine Mary Wilkinson, 33, of Shipston, following an RSPCA investigation into her cruelty toward Minnie, a bulldog.
The case was proved in her absence during a previous hearing, leading to her sentencing.
Wilkinson was given a 12-week sentence, which was suspended for a year, and received a lifelong ban on owning animals an order that cannot be challenged for ten years after being prosecuted by the RSPCA.
In 2019, a housing officer found Minnie’s decomposed body at Wilkinson’s former residence in Stratford’s Marigold Road.
The officer contacted the RSPCA upon discovery.
Inspector Thea Kerrison, involved in the case, described her response to the scene.
She was guided to a small kitchen, where the smell of decay was overwhelming, forcing her to cover her face.
She noted the room’s cramped size, about two by three meters, cluttered with dog bedding, blankets, and faeces, which impeded her access.
Inside, Minnie was curled in a plastic bed with a blanket.
The dog was extremely thin, with visible ribs and hips, in a curled sleeping posture, indicative of death.
Wilkinson faced additional penalties, including a ten-year animal ownership disqualification which is non-appealable, a suspended prison sentence of 12 weeks, 20 days of Rehabilitation Activity Requirement, and financial penalties including £150 in costs and a £128 victim surcharge.
Kerrison emphasised that Minnie suffered from neglect over weeks, as confirmed by veterinary post-mortem reports.
The environment’s filth and faecal matter reflected ongoing neglect.
Veterinarians identified both physical suffering due to starvation and dehydration and mental suffering caused by anxiety and stress rendering Minnie’s final days tragic.
Instead of seeking help or surrendering Minnie to an organisation, Wilkinson abandoned her, allowing her to endure a prolonged, suffering demise, breaking the trust of her pet who relied on her for care.
