CONLIG WOMAN CHRISTINE MALONE ESCAPES JAIL AFTER CHILD SEXUAL ABUSE PLOTS IN NORTHERN IRELAND
A woman from Conlig, Northern Ireland, identified as 55-year-old Christine Malone, has narrowly avoided imprisonment after being convicted of serious offences related to child exploitation and possession of indecent images. The case was heard at Downpatrick Crown Court, which is situated in Belfast, where the court was informed of Malone’s disturbing online activities that involved encouraging a man to send her explicit photographs of children.Malone, residing on Green Road in Conlig, was found to have engaged in highly sexualized and vile discussions concerning the sexual abuse of children, some as young as three years old. These conversations, which took place between May and August of 2014, revealed her involvement in encouraging and facilitating the sharing of such heinous material. The court heard that she not only solicited these images but also possessed indecent photographs herself. Despite the severity of her actions, she was sentenced to a three-year probation order and will be registered as a sex offender for a period of five years.
The court proceedings detailed that none of the images Malone possessed were of children she personally knew or had contact with. Instead, her online interactions with the man, who is originally from Lurgan, involved explicit discussions about child abuse and how they would harm children. The police investigation revealed that the man had since fled Northern Ireland and was now residing in the Netherlands, with extradition proceedings potentially underway to bring him back for prosecution.
During the hearing, it was disclosed that Malone had asked the man to send her videos and images depicting both children and adults engaged in pornographic acts. The judge, Geoffrey Miller, described the conversations between Malone and the man as “graphic in the extreme,” expressing grave concern over the “deepest possible concerns of appalling, distorted and reprehensible paedophilic thinking.”
Malone, who is a grandmother, was arrested in March 2017 following the emergence of these offences and subsequent involvement of social services. An investigation confirmed that her own children and grandchildren had not been subjected to any form of sexual abuse by her. During police interviews, Malone initially claimed she had an interest in online pornography and denied any knowledge of the Lurgan man or the discussions related to child sexual abuse. She even stated she could not recall whether she had received any images of children. In a startling confession, she told authorities, “I actually hate kids and don’t know why I had them myself.”
Malone later pleaded guilty to encouraging or assisting an offence by asking the man to send her explicit images between 26 May and 23 August 2014. She also admitted to possessing six indecent images on 17 July 2014, which constituted separate charges. The court considered her defense’s submission, which highlighted her troubled childhood and expressed remorse for her actions. The judge acknowledged her “lonely and isolated life” and noted that she had no prior or subsequent offences.
While passing sentence, Judge Geoffrey Miller emphasized the gravity of her conduct, describing her past online discussions as “utterly reprehensible” and characterized as “fantasy” by the defense. He issued a warning that failure to adhere to the probation conditions could lead to a prison sentence, underscoring the seriousness with which the court viewed her actions and the potential danger posed by such behavior.
