CHARLOTTE GILES OF ULCOMME SENTENCED FOR ANIMAL CRUELTY INVOLVING DOGS IN MAIDSTONE
In June 2016, authorities from the RSPCA conducted a thorough inspection of Charlotte Giles' residence located on Water Lane travellers site in Ulcombe, near Maidstone. The inspection revealed a distressing scene involving two dogs, a German shepherd named Shadow and a West Highland terrier called Benji, both of whom were found living in deplorable conditions that clearly indicated neglect and abuse.Inspectors observed that the dogs were kept in a backyard that was in a state of severe disrepair, with dilapidated kennels that offered little protection or comfort. The animals appeared to be suffering from malnutrition and neglect, with their living environment being visibly unclean and poorly maintained. Shadow, in particular, was found to have an infected wound on his neck, which was directly caused by the chain he was chained to. The injury had been left untreated by Giles, further highlighting the neglect these animals endured.
Following the discovery, the RSPCA officers promptly removed both dogs from Giles' property to ensure their safety and well-being. The case was subsequently investigated, leading to Charlotte Giles admitting to three violations under the Animal Welfare Act 2006. These included causing unnecessary suffering to Shadow through the untreated wound, as well as failing to provide the dogs with appropriate diets and suitable living environments.
Ellie Burt, an RSPCA inspector who attended the scene, expressed her distress over the case, stating, “Poor Shadow and Benji suffered needlessly. This was a very upsetting case and it was very sad to see that the condition of these dogs had been allowed to deteriorate.” She emphasized the importance of animal welfare and the role of the authorities in protecting vulnerable animals.
As a result of her actions, Charlotte Giles was sentenced to serve 250 hours of unpaid community work. Additionally, a deprivation order was issued, which mandated that all her pets be permanently removed from her care. She was also banned from keeping any animals for a period of ten years, a restriction that will remain in effect until September 2026. This case underscores the ongoing efforts of animal welfare organizations to combat cruelty and neglect, ensuring that animals like Shadow and Benji receive the care and compassion they deserve.
