WELLS MAN JAILED OVER ‘GRATUITOUS DEGRADATION’ OF HIS EX
A man who attacked his former partner has been jailed for what a judge called one of the worst cases of abuse he has seen.Charlie Nudds, 20, punched, bit and repeatedly spat in the face of his ex after becoming furious that his jumper had been dirtied by her young son.
The prolonged attack saw him smash up her home leaving her "scared of what he was going to do".
Nudds, of Northfield Crescent in Wells-next-the-sea, pleaded guilty to assault by beating and criminal damage over the attack which occurred on January 8.
District Judge Matthew Bone told him: "This is one of the worst cases of domestic abuse charged as assault by beating that I have seen." He said it had been a "prolonged and persistent" attack involving substantial force, using items as weapons, and that he had subjected his victim to "gratuitous degradation".
He also praised the woman as "extremely brave" after she appeared in court to read a statement about the impact on her of his offending.
She said their three-year relationship which began in 2020 had involved repeated "emotional and physical abuse".
It had left her feeling "trapped and powerless", she said.
"His abuse has destroyed my trust in people, especially men," she added.
James Landles, mitigating, said at the time of the offences Nudds had still been a teenager and that there was realistic prospect of rehabilitation due to his "immaturity" at the time and previous good character.
"Clearly he snapped on the day and the incident should not have happened," he added.
He was sentenced to four months to be served in a youth offenders institute and made subject of a 10-year restraining order.
