90-YEAR-OLD MAN WALKS FREE AFTER CHOKING WIFE IN SCOTLAND
A pensioner believed to be Scotland's oldest domestic abuser walked free from court Friday despite admitting he choked his 84-year-old wife in their bedroom. The 90-year-old Charles Morrison was banned from any contact with frail spouse Catherine, who told the court she was in favor of a non-harassment order.
Morrison admitted a course of abusive conduct over an 11-month period at their home in Condorrat, Lanarkshire.
This included shoving her onto a bed, restraining her there, putting his hand around her neck and choking her, causing her to have restricted breathing.
He also admitted acting aggressively on other occasions, shouting, swearing, making derogatory remarks, and pushing her onto a chair.
The abuse occurred between September 2023 and August 2024.
The prosecution had claimed the behavior spanned over five years from April 2019, but Morrison pleaded guilty to an amended charge.
He appeared at Airdrie Sheriff Court as a first offender.
Despite the conviction, he was put under social work supervision for a year.
Sheriff Tony McGlennan emphasized that the case involved serious matters due to the ages involved, but noted Morrison's clean record and the overall positive report, making community supervision an appropriate alternative to jail.
Morrison is banned from contacting his wife, entering her street, or going to Airdrie Road, following her concerns he would go there to watch her.
He was warned not to approach her by any means, including social media, and to avoid any direct or indirect contact for the specified period.
