GLASGOW MAN CONVICTED OF HEINOUS ATTACKS ON MENTALLY HANDICAPPED WOMEN
A BRUTAL killer and rapist was jailed for life yesterday for savage attacks on two mentally handicapped women.Charles Hughes raped one of his victims, who was 55 and suffering from Down's Syndrome, and left her 52-year-old friend in a coma from which she never recovered.
Hughes, 24, of Glasgow Road, St Ninians, Stirling, admitted the culpable homicide of one woman, the rape of the other and the attempted murder of Mr Daniel Knox.
The court was told that on June 22 Hughes savagely attacked Mr Knox in a close, punching and kicking him, dragging him onto the road, and hitting him on the head with a lump of concrete while shouting: 'Die you bastard.' Hughes was released on bail after this assault.
While out on bail, he broke into the home of two mentally handicapped women on July 8, stamping on the face of a 55-year-old woman with Down's Syndrome and raping her.
He also repeatedly kicked her and stamped on her head and body, leaving her in a coma and resulting in her death on July 29.
Hughes was found sane and fit to plead by two psychiatrists.
The judge told Hughes: 'Your actions indicate that you are a dangerous man and I have to have regard to the protection of the public.'
