CHARLES CODONA FROM CAMBUSLANG FOUND GUILTY OF ASSAULTING TWO BOYS IN PERTHSHIRE
In a case that has drawn significant attention, Charles Codona, a resident of Hilton Terrace in Cambuslang, was convicted of assaulting two young boys in Perthshire. The incident occurred in July of the previous year, and the court proceedings revealed disturbing details about the events that transpired.According to court testimony, the two boys, both under the age of 16, were involved in what appeared to be innocent play fighting. However, their interaction was interrupted when Codona, reportedly becoming irritated with their behavior, decided to intervene in a manner that would have lasting repercussions. The sheriff heard evidence through a video link from both children, who recounted the assault with clarity and distress.
The younger boy described how he was so frightened by Codona’s actions that he fled the scene and sought refuge at his grandmother’s house. He explained that the incident was triggered by a simple play fight with his older companion. He stated, “It was just one (blow) to the head or the leg,” adding that he did not sustain any serious injuries but believed he had bruises. The boy also expressed ongoing fear, saying, “I felt quite scared,” and further revealed that even after Codona left the area, he remained anxious, worried that the man might try to take him away during the night.
The older boy provided a similar account, describing how Codona threatened him with violence while he was standing in a garden near his home. When asked by the deputy fiscal, Rebecca Kynaston, about how the incident affected him, the boy responded simply, “sick.” He also mentioned that the blows he received left a lasting impression, and he continued to feel scared even after the event.
Once the children confided in their family members about the assault, police were called to investigate the matter. During the court proceedings, solicitor Steve Lafferty, representing Codona, questioned both boys about the possibility that they might have mistaken his client for the person who hit them. Both children firmly denied this, asserting that Codona was indeed the individual responsible. They also rejected the suggestion that their bruises were caused by play fighting or participation in sports, emphasizing that the injuries were the result of the assault.
Charles Codona, aged 50, was charged with wilfully ill-treating the children at an address in Perthshire last year. He also faced a charge of causing a breach of the peace by threatening the older boy with violence on July 11. Codona pleaded not guilty to all charges, but Sheriff Lindsay Foulis found him guilty of all three. The sheriff deferred sentencing until May 13, pending further proceedings and considerations.
