A Sinn Féin councillor, Cathal McLaughlin, has been expelled from the party following his conviction for sexual assault by a Scottish court.
Cathal McLaughlin, who represented the Ballymoney area on the Causeway Coast and Glens council, was convicted in Scotland, with sentencing scheduled for 8 August.
The party issued a statement expressing their thoughts are with the victim of this serious crime, noting that Mr.
McLaughlin did not inform the party at any point about the criminal proceedings.
A party spokesperson stated, 'Given the severity of the offence, his membership of Sinn Féin is terminated with immediate effect.' The conviction was confirmed by the Scottish court service.
