COUNTY DURHAM THUG JAILED FOR CONTROLLING AND COERCIVE BEHAVIOUR, ASSAULT AND STALKING
A violent thug who made his partner’s life a misery as he attempted to control every aspect of her life has been jailed.Carl Stockdale left his victim feeling like a prisoner in her own home during a three-month period of coercive and controlling behaviour where he would threaten violence or threaten to take her dog.
The 38-year-old would repeatedly take his victim’s car to prevent her going to work and on one occasion refused to let her out of the vehicle until she threatened to jump out, Teesside Crown Court heard.
Nigel Soppitt, prosecuting, said Stockdale’s behaviour left the woman terrified that he would hurt her and he would threaten to take his own life to maintain his grip over her.
“She felt like she was a prisoner in her own home,” he said.
“He was always in possession of a knife which he used to frighten her.” The court heard how Stockdale smashed the woman’s work computer in a rage before assaulting her when he spat in her face.
Stockdale, of Forster Avenue, Sherburn Village, County Durham, pleaded guilty to controlling and coercive behaviour between April 11 and July 1 this year, criminal damage on April 16, assault by beating on April 16, and stalking with fear of violence between June 6 and July 2.
Tony Davis, mitigating, said his client accepts the impact his behaviour had on his victim and is now having therapy whilst in custody to deal with his issues.
Recorder Dapinder Singh sentenced Stockdale to a total of two years and three months for all offences after he made a number of vile threats towards her.
“She believed you were paranoid because of the drugs you were taking,” he said.
Stockdale was also made subject of a ten-year restraining order.
