HARROGATE MAN CARL BRIGGS SENTENCED TO 16 YEARS FOR RAPE AND SEXUAL ASSAULT ON YOUNG GIRL
A man from Harrogate, North Yorkshire, has been handed a significant prison sentence after being convicted of serious sexual offenses involving a young girl.Carl Darren Briggs, aged 43, was found guilty of multiple charges related to the abuse and was subsequently sentenced to 16 years in prison.
In addition to his custodial term, Briggs has been given a two-year extension on license and has been placed on the Sex Offenders’ Register, reflecting the gravity of his crimes.
According to North Yorkshire Police, the allegations against Briggs came to light in June 2021, when the victim confided in her family members about the abuse she had endured.
Following this disclosure, law enforcement authorities acted swiftly, leading to Briggs’s arrest shortly thereafter.
The police launched an extensive investigation into the matter, gathering evidence through interviews, victim statements, disclosures made to counselors, and digital device examinations.
This comprehensive inquiry culminated in charges being brought against Briggs, who faced three counts in total: two counts of rape of a child under 13 years old and one count of sexual assault on a child under 13 by touching.
During the three-day trial at York Crown Court, the jury was presented with detailed evidence.
It was revealed that the victim only came to understand the wrongfulness of Briggs’s actions after learning about the human body in school, which helped her recognize the nature of the abuse she suffered.
The victim, in her personal statement, expressed profound emotional distress, stating, “I no longer feel good about myself, do not like the way I look, or feel nice in anything I wear.
I feel different, cannot explain to my friends why I do not want to be around them, or why I cry without anything being said to me.
I just want to feel happy about myself, and my family to be happy, but it will not be because everything has changed.
I have changed since this terrible ordeal, and I feel that I will never be the same person again.” Her mother also provided a heartfelt statement, describing her sleepless nights and constant mental replay of the events.
She said, “This is a living nightmare that I will deal with for the rest of my life,” highlighting the emotional toll the case has taken on the family.
The evidence presented in court convinced the jury beyond a reasonable doubt, leading to Briggs’s conviction on all charges.
Despite denying the allegations throughout the trial, Briggs was found guilty of the two counts of rape and sexual assault.
The sentencing was handed down on Friday, March 1, marking a significant milestone in the pursuit of justice for the young victim and her family.
