Coventry Rapist
In a case that has shocked the Coventry community, three men were formally sentenced to lengthy prison terms following their involvement in a brutal sexual assault that occurred in the city during January 2016. The incident began when a woman, after leaving the Grosvenor Casino, was lured into a vehicle under false pretenses. Once inside, she was subjected to a harrowing ordeal as the offenders drove her around Coventry, during which she was repeatedly assaulted.

These men, identified as Calin Lacatus, Timotei Baran, and Constantin Vila, faced justice after a rigorous three-week trial held at Warwick Crown Court. The court heard detailed testimonies and evidence that confirmed their guilt in multiple counts of rape and sexual assault. Lacatus, aged 28 and residing on Beake Avenue in Coventry, was handed a sentence of ten years in prison. His conviction included three counts of rape and one count of sexual assault, reflecting the severity of his crimes.

Timotei Baran, who is 21 years old and was reported to have no fixed address at the time of his sentencing, received a nine-year prison term. His charges included two counts of rape and one count of sexual assault. The court noted his involvement in the assault was equally egregious, warranting a substantial custodial sentence.

Constantin Vila, also aged 28 and from Victory Road in Coventry, was sentenced to eight years behind bars. His conviction was for rape and sexual assault, further emphasizing the dangerous nature of his actions. The sentences handed down to these men underscore the gravity of their offenses and the impact on the victim.

The victim, in a courageous act of resilience, managed to escape from her assailants after enduring repeated assaults. She then contacted a friend, who promptly took her back to the Grosvenor Casino to seek help and contact the police. Her bravery and cooperation were instrumental in ensuring that the offenders were brought to justice.

A police spokesperson described the trio as “dangerous sexual predators who preyed on a vulnerable woman,” highlighting the malicious intent behind their actions. The spokesperson also praised the victim for her strength and support throughout the investigation, which played a crucial role in securing convictions. The case serves as a stark reminder of the importance of community vigilance and the ongoing efforts of law enforcement to combat sexual violence in Coventry.
