BRYAN CALAM GUILTY OF SEXUAL ABUSE IN SWANLAND: FORMER POLICE INSPECTOR CONVICTED OF CHILD SEX OFFENSES
In a significant development from Swanland, a retired police officer has been convicted of serious sexual offenses involving a young girl. Bryan Calam, aged 71, who previously served as an inspector within the Humberside Police force, was found guilty of abusing a schoolgirl under the age of consent. The allegations date back approximately 15 years, during which Calam is accused of grooming and exploiting the victim for his own illicit purposes.Calam, residing at Wood View in Swanland, had a distinguished career working in the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) and regional crime units within Humberside Police. Despite his professional background, he faced serious criminal charges related to his conduct towards the underage girl. The court proceedings revealed that he was charged with five counts of indecent assault and three counts of indecency with a child. These charges stemmed from allegations that he engaged in inappropriate sexual behavior with the victim, with claims suggesting that the abuse occurred on approximately 20 to 30 occasions.
However, it is important to note that Calam was not charged with the specific counts related to the alleged sexual encounters, due to legal reasons that prevented the court from pursuing those particular allegations. Despite this, the jury was presented with sufficient evidence to convict him on all eight counts he was charged with.
Throughout the trial, Bryan Calam maintained a defensive stance, dismissing the accusations as “rubbish” and asserting that the victim was “vindictive.” His defense argued that the claims were unfounded and motivated by malice. Nevertheless, the jury, after deliberating for less than five hours, reached a unanimous verdict, finding Calam guilty of all charges brought against him.
The conviction marks a significant moment in the ongoing efforts to address and combat child sexual abuse, especially involving individuals in positions of authority or trust. The court's decision underscores the importance of accountability and justice for victims of such heinous crimes, regardless of the offender’s background or previous reputation.
