HELMSLEY PENSIONER JAILED FOR SEXUAL ABUSE OF CHILD
A pensioner who did the “unforgiveable” and sexually abused a child has been sentenced to jail.Brian Jackson, aged 76, from Castle View, Helmsley, pleaded guilty to charges of sexual assault, all committed several years ago.
He was told by the Recorder of York, Judge Sean Morris, "What you did, as you well know, is unforgivable." Jackson had instructed the young victim not to tell anyone, claiming he would get into trouble.
The child confided in her parents, and police were subsequently involved.
During questioning, Jackson told officers, "I will plead guilty," which the judge acknowledged as a sign of some decency amidst the heinous crime.
Jackson was sentenced to 33 months in prison and will be on the sex offenders’ register for life.
Additionally, he is subject to a 10-year sexual harm prevention order which bans him from contact with girls under 16 and limits his internet usage.
Police found indecent images on two of his internet devices, although they were inaccessible, and there was no evidence he could access them.
Jackson suffers from medical conditions including arthritis, and his sentencing was delayed for him to undergo treatment.
His son attended court to support him.
The court heard that Jackson had no prior convictions and accepted that he was genuinely remorseful, having suffered personally, including the breakup of his marriage.
He expressed remorse and indicated he would not repeat the offenses, and it was noted that he had waited for police to arrest him with relief.
Jackson’s solicitor remarked that he had lost his social circle and his wife, and that he was shocked by his actions, stating that if he could undo what he did, he would.
The judge emphasized the gravity of his actions but also acknowledged his remorse and the impact on his own life.
