CORNWALL MAN PLEADED GUILTY TO MANSLAUGHTER AFTER KILLING PARTNER
A 69-year-old man from Par in Cornwall, named Brian Downie, admitted guilt to manslaughter after killing his 81-year-old partner, Lesley Davies, by stamping on her head multiple times outside their residence. The court described the incident as a violent assault where Downie chased after Davies, knocked her over, and then repeatedly stomped on her face, resulting in her death.
It was revealed during the trial at Truro Crown Court that Downie was suffering from a psychosis linked to undiagnosed Lewy body dementia at the time of the incident.
Prior to the attack, Downie behaved strangely, acting bizarrely in the street on July 18 and making multiple unusual phone calls to his son.
On the same day, he contacted emergency services at 13:25 BST, and around 14:00, witnesses saw him pursuing Ms Davies as she attempted to escape before he assaulted her fiercely.
She was transported to hospital but succumbed to her injuries on August 4.
Downie received a hospital order under section 37 of the Mental Health Act and was visibly upset as he heard details of his conduct.
Additionally, he was subject to a section 41 restriction order.
The court learned that Ms Davies was an active woman, passionate about walking, who had met Downie online approximately in 2013 after her husband's death.
Downie moved into her home in 2017, and their relationship was reportedly close, with no prior indication of violence.
The case was described as a tragic confluence of mental health problems and domestic violence.
