VICTIM OF JAMESTOWN ABUSER SUFFERED ‘TWO YEARS OF HELL’

Brendan Rogers was jailed for four years at the High Court in Glasgow on June 15.

His harrowing crimes included headbutting and choking one of his victims – but Rogers insisted he was “just messing about”.

The other woman recalled how she suffered at his hands while due to give birth.

Following the sentencing, one of his victims told the Reporter: “I’m gutted he didn’t get longer but he is still being punished.

I am just glad my two years of hell is over with.

If it wasn’t for my good friends and fiancée standing by me I’d have caved.

And if one certain person hadn’t pushed me to go and talk to police I’d still be suffering – or dead.” Lord Summers told Rogers, of Jamestown, the trial evidence revealed his actions were “nothing short of abominable”.

The judge added: “Your treatment of them was a disgrace.” Rogers was convicted of four attacks on his partner between November 2014 and May 2015 at a house in Dumbarton.

He gave the woman a black eye around Christmas 2014.

Just months later, Rogers then headbutted and choked her as he thought she was making fun of the way he spoke.

Rogers claimed he had not been serious during that incident.

But, in court, the woman said: “You don’t choke someone messing about, do you?” Rogers was also found guilty of attacking a second former partner in Glasgow between December 2004 and April 2007.

The jury heard the woman was battered while pregnant.

Prosecutor Lisa Gillespie said the women were attacked at home in a “place where they should have felt safe”.

In her closing speech, she added: “They were assaulted by a man who was their partner – he should have been protecting them.” Sean Templeton, defending, said Rogers was aware of the “harm” he has caused.

The advocate added: “He is highly aware that he is in custody due to his behaviour.

He clearly recognises the need to change.” In response to the sentencing, Inspector John Mullen, based at Dumbarton, said tackling domestic abuse is one of the “key priorities” for Police Scotland.

He added: “Domestic abuse is unacceptable and encompasses a number of different crimes.

Domestic abuse occurs in all walks of life and victims must be confident that their needs will be taken into account should they take the brave step to disclose information.

There is an absolute focus on ensuring our response to these issues is victim focused.

We understand the need to create an environment where domestic abuse is not tolerated and where our children and young people grow up to recognise the value of healthy relationships.

The sentence imposed by the court sends a clear message that domestic abuse will not be tolerated.”
