WOMAN GUILTY OF NEGLECT AFTER UNDERWEIGHT PONIES FOUND IN WET AND HAZARDOUS PADDOCKS

A woman from Lincoln has been convicted of causing suffering to several ponies after animal welfare organizations made a profoundly distressing discovery.

At Lincoln Magistrates' Court, it was described how the RSPCA and Bransby Horses carried out investigations into the neglect of multiple horses owned by Beth Lane on Meadow Lane, North Scarle, following reports raising concerns about their welfare.

The inspection revealed three ponies specifically a piebald colt, a chestnut Shetland pony gelding, and a bay miniature pony gelding had endured unnecessary hardship as a result of Lane's actions.

Additionally, a fourth pony, a grey miniature pony gelding, was found not to have received proper care.

The visitation in February 2024 involved RSPCA Inspector Annette della-Porta, supported by Bransby Horse Rescue officers.

They observed the horses and ponies in muddy, waterlogged paddocks filled with hazards.

It was determined that several of Lane's horses were unwell.

One piebald pony was extremely underweight, uncoordinated, and unsteady on its hind legs.

A small chestnut colt was also severely underweight with extensive hair loss across its loins.

Authorities removed four horses from the premises, which were then placed under the care of charitable organizations, with Lincolnshire Police assisting in the removal.

A veterinary specialist examined the animals and reported that three had been suffering unnecessarily for two to three weeks, primarily due to neglect of parasite control and poor body condition.

All four ponies showed a body condition score of only one out of five, indicating severe undernourishment.

The one-year-old bay colt was diagnosed with muscle wastage, lice infestation, dental issues, nasal discharge, frequent coughing, and wheezy lungs.

Another young pony, a grey colt of the same age, also exhibited muscle loss, lice, overgrown feet, sharp teeth, and weakness during movement.

By April 2024, all four animals that had been rescued were showing signs of weight gain.

Bethany Lane, residing on Eagle Moor, appeared before Lincoln Magistrates' Court for sentencing on June 2, after a trial.

She received a 12-month community order, which requires her to participate in 15 days of rehabilitation activities.

Additionally, she was fined £500 and ordered to pay £10,000 in costs.
