BENJAMIN SOLOWAN SENTENCED IN SARK FOR CHILD SEX OFFENCES AND ATTEMPTED MEETINGS IN THE UK
Benjamin Solowan, a man from Sark, has been handed down a 12-year prison sentence after being convicted of multiple serious child sexual offences. The case drew significant attention from law enforcement and the judicial system due to the gravity of the crimes committed.Solowan pleaded guilty to a total of 12 charges, which included attempted sexual activity involving a child under the age of 13, inciting a child to engage in sexual activity, and the sexual touching of a minor under 13. His arrest took place on December 16, 2024, on the island of Sark, where authorities uncovered a disturbing collection of indecent images of children stored on devices confiscated from his residence.
Further investigations revealed that Solowan had been actively attempting to meet a child in the United Kingdom. He had traveled to the UK with the apparent intention of meeting a young girl he believed to be 12 years old. However, this meeting never materialized. The authorities uncovered evidence of his online activities, including conversations with someone claiming to be a 14-year-old girl in Belgium. These chats, which took place in October 2024, were later confirmed to be with an adult male, exposing the deception.
In November 2024, Solowan booked flights to Manchester, seemingly with the plan to meet the child he believed was 12. During these online exchanges, he also discussed plans to meet other girls, which led to four additional charges being brought against him. The police emphasized their unwavering commitment to protecting vulnerable young people from exploitation, highlighting that swift law enforcement action can prevent potential harm.
The court's ruling underscores the seriousness of Solowan’s offences, and he is now serving a lengthy prison sentence. Authorities in Sark and the UK continue to work together to combat such crimes and ensure justice for victims, reaffirming their dedication to safeguarding children from predators.
