Manchester City footballer Benjamin Mendy has been charged with rape.The 27-year-old defender has been officially charged with four counts of rape and one count of sexual assault, according to Cheshire Police.The charges involve three individuals over the age of 16 and pertain to alleged incidents occurring between October 2020 and August 2021.Benjamin Mendy, who resides in Prestbury, has been remanded in custody and is scheduled to appear before Chester Magistrates' Court on Friday.The athlete, who has captained last season's Premier League champions Manchester City since 2017 after transferring from Monaco for approximately £52 million, is under police investigation.A police spokesperson emphasized: "Cheshire Constabulary and the Crown Prosecution Service would like to remind everyone that criminal proceedings against Mendy are live and that he has a right to a fair trial."Manchester City issued a statement saying that the defender, also a member of the French national team, has been suspended while the investigation is ongoing: "The matter is subject to a legal process and the club is therefore unable to make further comment until that process is complete."
