BARRY SEARLE'S HORRIFIC NEGLECT OF YELVERTON PONIES LEADS TO SUSPENDED PRISON SENTENCE
Barry Searle, a pensioner residing in Riverslea, Clearbrook, Yelverton PL20 6JB, was found guilty of severe neglect towards his two ponies, Tinkerbell and Fudge. The case, which drew attention from animal welfare authorities, highlighted the extent of suffering inflicted upon the animals due to Searle’s failure to provide proper care.In 2021, the RSPCA, working alongside the Mare and Foal Sanctuary, responded to concerns raised about the condition of the ponies. Inspector Claire Ryder, who led the investigation, was accompanied by police officers when they visited the field where Searle kept his horses. Upon arrival, she observed distressing signs of neglect. Tinkerbell approached the inspectors, and it was immediately apparent that her condition was dire. Flies swarmed around her eyes, and her left eye was visibly infected, with a noticeable hole indicating that the eye had been lost due to neglect. Her hooves were overgrown, causing her to be lame, and she showed signs of pain and discomfort.
Fudge, the other pony, was also in a poor state, requiring hoof trimming and treatment for lice and fleas. Both animals exhibited signs of prolonged neglect, with their feet in urgent need of attention. The inspector documented the conditions with photographs and video footage, which were later shared with a specialist equine veterinarian. Following the evidence, the police seized the ponies for their welfare.
Subsequent veterinary examinations confirmed the severity of the neglect. The vet found that Tinkerbell’s right eye had shrunk into the orbit, with the eye eventually being surgically removed. The remaining eyelids were swollen, and she was discharging fluids, indicating infection. Her hooves were overgrown, and she was lame, suggesting she had not received proper farrier care for several months. Fudge also required hoof trimming, and both ponies were found to be infested with lice and fleas, conditions that had persisted over an extended period.
During the court proceedings, Searle admitted to one count of causing unnecessary suffering and another of failing to meet the needs of his animals. The case underscored that although the neglect was not deliberate, it was prolonged and resulted in significant suffering for Tinkerbell. Inspector Ryder emphasized that owners have a duty to ensure their animals receive appropriate care and treatment. Despite numerous offers of support to improve the ponies’ welfare, Searle chose to ignore these opportunities, leading to the animals’ suffering.
Following treatment and recovery, both ponies are now in the care of the RSPCA in foster homes, where they are receiving the ongoing care they need to heal physically and emotionally. The court sentenced Searle to a nine-week prison term, suspended for 12 months. Additionally, he was ordered to pay £600 in prosecution costs and a £128 victim surcharge. The case serves as a stark reminder of the importance of responsible animal ownership and the consequences of neglect.
