BARRY KEAY FROM ECCLESHALL SENTENCED IN STAFFORDSHIRE FOR ABUSE OF UNDERAGE GIRLS
In a case that has shocked the local community of Eccleshall and the wider Staffordshire area, Barry Keay, a man aged 60, has been sentenced to a lengthy prison term following his conviction for serious sexual offenses committed against underage girls. The crimes span over several decades, with allegations dating back to the late 1970s and extending into 2016.Keay, a resident of High Street in Eccleshall, was found guilty of multiple counts of sexual assault, including two counts of rape and several counts of indecent assault. The court proceedings revealed that the victims were girls under the age of 16, making the offenses particularly grave and distressing for the community.
He admitted to two counts of rape that occurred in 2016, as well as five counts of indecent assault that took place between 1978 and 1984. The guilty plea was entered on March 25, and the sentencing took place on the following Friday at Stafford Crown Court. The court heard evidence of the disturbing nature of the crimes, which spanned nearly four decades.
Keay was sentenced to a total of 15 years in prison. The sentence was structured as nine years for each of the two rape counts, to be served concurrently, reflecting the severity of these offenses. Additionally, he received a six-year sentence for two of the indecent assault counts, with an extra eighteen months for the remaining three counts, which are to be served concurrently. This sentencing structure underscores the gravity of his actions and the court’s intent to impose a significant penalty.
Recognizing the danger posed by Keay, the judge classified him as a dangerous offender. As a result, he was also handed an extended license period of six years, which could potentially extend his time behind bars up to 21 years if he breaches the terms of his release. Furthermore, Keay was subjected to a sexual harm prevention order, a legal measure designed to restrict his activities and reduce the risk of reoffending.
Overall, the case highlights the ongoing efforts of the justice system to address and penalize sexual offenses against minors, and serves as a stark reminder of the importance of safeguarding vulnerable individuals in the community of Eccleshall and beyond.
