HERSTMONCEUX MAN BARRY GRANT SENTENCED FOR CHILD SEX OFFENCES IN EASTBOURNE
In a case that has sent shockwaves through the local community, Barry Grant, a 65-year-old resident of Stunts Green in Herstmonceux, was convicted of multiple serious child sex offences that took place over a span of several years. The offences occurred in Eastbourne between January 23, 2010, and January 24, 2014, and involved disturbing acts committed against a girl under the age of 13.Grant was found guilty by a jury at Lewes Crown Court in August after a trial that lasted several days. Despite his denial of the charges, the evidence presented was compelling enough to secure a conviction. The charges included four counts of child sexual offences, specifically sexual assault of a girl under 13, causing a girl under 13 to watch a sexual act, inducing a girl under 13 to engage in sexual activity, and engaging in sexual activity in the presence of a girl under 13.
Following the verdict, Hove Crown Court sentenced Grant to a prison term of five years on October 28. The sentence reflects the gravity of the offences and the court’s recognition of the harm inflicted upon the young victims. In addition to his imprisonment, Grant was subjected to a Sexual Harm Prevention Order, which prohibits him from residing with, contacting, or working with any child under the age of 16. This order aims to prevent any further risk to children and to protect the community from potential harm.
Furthermore, Grant was ordered to sign the Sex Offenders Register for life, a measure that ensures ongoing monitoring and public safety. The case underscores the importance of vigilance and justice in safeguarding vulnerable children from exploitation and abuse, and it serves as a stark reminder of the serious consequences faced by those who commit such heinous acts.
