In September 2021, a disturbing series of events unfolded in the town of Stenhousemuir, Stirlingshire, involving Barry Buchanan, a 46-year-old man from Larbert. Buchanan's actions, which included approaching young girls with predatory intent and making explicit sexual offers, have shocked the local community and prompted a serious legal response.
According to court reports, Buchanan was observed targeting a group of teenage girls, aged 13, 14, and 15, as they sat chatting on benches in Stenhousemuir. Witnesses saw him engaging in bizarre behavior, including rubbing white powder on his gums, which may have been an attempt to appear more intimidating or to mask his intentions. Following this, he launched into a series of sexualized remarks directed at the girls, causing them to feel terrified and unsafe.
The prosecution, led by prosecutor Michael Maguire, confirmed that Buchanan was a stranger to the girls. He approached them and explicitly asked for oral sex in exchange for a sum of £250. The situation escalated when Buchanan threatened a 15-year-old girl with a knife, saying, “I’ll slit your neck,” which further heightened the girls’ fear. In response to the threatening behavior, the girls began recording the encounter on their mobile phones and promptly contacted the police for help.
In addition to the incident in Stenhousemuir, Buchanan was observed approaching another group of children, this time on King Street, also in Stenhousemuir. The group consisted of children aged 12, 13, and 14. Buchanan initially asked for cigarettes, but when refused, he became aggressive. He threatened a 13-year-old girl with anal sex, made further threats to slit her throat, and then shockingly pulled down his trousers, exposing his penis and showing his bare backside to the children. The situation was defused when one of the children’s parents arrived on the scene, causing Buchanan to walk away.
Following his departure, some of the children from the first group followed Buchanan to his home, located in Larbert, and notified police of his whereabouts. Law enforcement officers quickly responded and arrested Buchanan. The police investigation was supported by footage from mobile phones and CCTV cameras positioned outside nearby licensed premises, which captured parts of Buchanan’s disturbing behavior.
Buchanan, who was unemployed at the time, pleaded guilty to charges of breach of the peace and indecent exposure. His defense attorney, Willie McIntyre, revealed that Buchanan had been released from prison only three months prior to these incidents, which occurred on the early evening of June 25th, 2021.
During the court proceedings at Stirling Sheriff Court, Sheriff Derek Hamilton sentenced Buchanan to a year of social work supervision and imposed a restriction of liberty order, confining him to his home from 6 pm to 6 am for six months. Additionally, Buchanan was placed on the sex offenders’ register for a period of five years, reflecting the severity of his actions and the need for ongoing monitoring to protect the community from further harm.
