BARRIE PLATTS SENTENCED TO PRISON IN STOCKTON HEATH FOR CHILD PORNOGRAPHY

In August 2002, Barrie Platts, a 50-year-old man from Limetree Avenue in Stockton Heath, was sentenced to prison after being convicted of possessing child pornographic images. Platts was visibly emotional in Warrington Magistrates Court as his sentence was announced.

Prosecutor Joanne Parsons explained that a joint investigation between Greater Manchester and Hertfordshire police led to a search warrant being executed at Platts' residence. During the search, officers seized various computer and video equipment. Parsons noted that Platts, who owns a painting and decorating business, had downloaded over 400 images of child pornography over approximately a year.

Defense lawyer Edward Timpson stated that Platts downloaded the images solely for personal use, with no evidence suggesting distribution, and that the computer was used only by him. Timpson added, “When Platts was arrested, he was very distressed and said he was sorry for what he had done. He has cooperated fully with the police from the start of the investigation.”

It was also reported that Platts’ wife remains supportive of him, and he is currently receiving counseling. Timpson emphasized, “He says he is disgusted and horrified at what he has done and felt that he needed help.”

Platts pleaded guilty to possessing an indecent photograph or pseudo-photograph of a child and to four other charges related to making such images. He received a 12-month prison sentence and has been registered on the sex offenders' register.
