ARTHUR HODGSON OF KEYINGHAM SENT TO PRISON FOR CHILD SEX OFFENCES IN EAST RIDING AND HULL

In June 2017, a former local politician from the East Riding of Yorkshire, Arthur Hodgson, was sentenced to over two years in prison after being convicted of serious child sex offences. Hodgson, aged 70, who previously served as a Conservative councillor representing South East Holderness on East Riding Council, appeared at Hull Crown Court to face the charges. As he arrived, he waved at photographers and publicly maintained his innocence, attempting to project confidence despite the gravity of the allegations against him.

However, his demeanor changed dramatically as he was led away in a prison van following his conviction. The court's verdict marked a devastating blow to his reputation, which was described as being “in ruins” after the jury found him guilty of three child sex offences committed over a span of twenty years. Notably, Hodgson was acquitted of six other charges related to similar offences, but the convictions he did face were enough to condemn him.

Hodgson’s involvement in the community extended beyond his role as a councillor; he was also a member of the Humberside Fire Authority and served on Keyingham Parish Council. Despite his local prominence, one of his victims described him as “domineering and intimidating,” highlighting the abusive nature of his conduct.

The judge, David Tremberg, sentenced Hodgson to 27 months in prison. In his remarks, the judge emphasized the absence of remorse or acceptance from Hodgson, stating, “The court has seen and heard not one hint of acceptance, contrition, insight or remorse. In my judgement, no sentence other than immediate custody is appropriate to deal with matters of this seriousness.”

The most severe offence involved Hodgson pinning down a young girl, estimated to be between 11 and 12 years old, by holding her hands above her head and placing a foot over hers to prevent her from escaping. He assaulted her under the false pretense of a children’s game, a disturbing detail that underscored the manipulative tactics he employed.

In another case, Hodgson’s victim recounted how he had visited her under the pretext of fixing a computer, only to commit an assault. The judge questioned the trustworthiness of Hodgson, asking rhetorically, “Why should anybody think you could not be trusted?”

The court heard that the victims had endured long-lasting emotional and psychological trauma, with some suffering into adulthood. They described feelings of shame, anxiety, and a loss of confidence, alongside flashbacks that haunted them years after the incidents. The judge acknowledged the profound and enduring impact Hodgson’s actions had inflicted, stating, “The legacy of what you have done to these victims’ lives on.”

Hodgson, who resides on Church Lane in Keyingham, is required to register as a sex offender for ten years as part of his sentence. The offences he committed occurred before he was elected to the East Riding Council in 2011, raising questions about his conduct during his time in public service.

Addressing Hodgson directly, the judge remarked, “You are highly respected within the local community, or at least you have been, and your reputation is in ruins.” This statement underscored the devastating personal and social consequences of his criminal actions, which have irreparably damaged his standing in the community of Keyingham and beyond.
