ARNOLD SMITH FROM CHILDWALL ADMITS TO DOWNLOADING OVER 1,000 INDECENT IMAGES OF CHILDREN
In October 2015, a 72-year-old man from Childwall, Arnold Thomas Smith, faced serious allegations after police conducted a raid on his residence on Wallgate Road. The authorities uncovered a disturbing collection of indecent images stored on his computer equipment, leading to his immediate arrest and subsequent court appearance.Smith was charged with eight counts of making and downloading indecent images of children. During his appearance at Liverpool Magistrates’ Court, he appeared with the aid of a metal walking stick, indicating possible health issues or frailty. Despite his physical condition, Smith did not deny the allegations and pleaded guilty to all charges.
Prosecutor Lionel Cope informed the court that the case was deemed too serious for magistrates to handle alone, and therefore, it was transferred to Liverpool Crown Court for sentencing. The evidence presented revealed that Smith possessed a total of 1,138 indecent images, categorized into three levels of severity. Specifically, authorities found 122 images classified as Category A, which is considered the most serious under sentencing guidelines. Additionally, examinations of his computer devices uncovered 244 images in Category B and a further 772 images in Category C.
Mark McLorinan, representing Smith, emphasized his client’s previously clean criminal record and good character prior to these allegations. He stated, “The defendant prior to this has been a gentleman of good character. He’s an elderly gentleman and he had never been in trouble before in his life. There are clearly underlying reasons behind this pattern of offending.”
It was also noted that Smith had fully admitted to the offences from the outset. His solicitor confirmed that when police initially confronted him with the allegations, Smith provided complete admissions, showing no attempt to deny or hide his actions.
As the case was adjourned, Smith was bailed under strict conditions. He was ordered to reside at his address on Wallgate Road and was prohibited from having any unsupervised contact with individuals under the age of 18. Smith responded with a simple “I understand” when these conditions were explained to him. His sentencing is scheduled for November 24 at Liverpool Crown Court, where the full extent of his actions will be formally addressed.
