ANTONY NORCUP BLYTHE BRIDGE LORRY DRIVER CAUGHT WITH CHILD INDECENT IMAGES IN STOKE-ON-TRENT

In March 2022, Antony Norcup, a pensioner from Blythe Bridge, found himself at the center of a serious criminal investigation involving the possession of indecent images of children. The case unfolded after police officers executed a search warrant at his residence, located on Bridgewood Road in Blythe Bridge, during which they confiscated his laptop and mobile phone for forensic analysis.

Upon examination of the devices, authorities discovered a disturbing collection of digital material. The investigation revealed that Norcup had stored a total of 54 indecent images depicting children as young as five being abused. In addition to these, there was one image classified as extreme pornography and another that was prohibited under current legislation. The content was particularly alarming, given the age of the children involved and the nature of the images.

Further scrutiny of Norcup’s internet search history uncovered disturbing queries, including terms such as 'teen sex,' 'pre teen hard porn,' and 'bestiality.' These searches indicated a troubling interest in illegal and exploitative material. Police also found that Norcup had purchased applications designed to facilitate access to the dark web, allowing him to browse anonymously and conceal his activities.

Following the police raid in June 2020, Norcup was taken into custody and subsequently charged with multiple offences. During his police interview, the 68-year-old admitted that the devices seized were his. He claimed that he had been searching for legal pornography and that the images of children he had stored were deleted after viewing. Norcup also stated that his interest in gymnastics and curiosity about the human body's flexibility motivated his searches, attempting to justify his actions as innocent or related to his interests.

At Stoke-on-Trent Crown Court, Norcup pleaded guilty to three counts: making indecent images of children, possessing an extreme pornographic image, and possessing a prohibited image of a child. The court heard that his actions had serious implications, not only for the victims depicted but also for the community's safety and trust.

Judge Holt, presiding over the case, acknowledged the impact of Norcup’s offending but noted that the defendant had lost his job as a Heavy Goods Vehicle (HGV) driver due to his criminal activities. Despite this, Holt expressed hope that Norcup might find employment in the future. The judge sentenced him to a two-year community order, emphasizing that this approach was more appropriate than imprisonment in this case.

The community order includes a 30-day rehabilitation activity requirement and 100 hours of unpaid work, aimed at addressing Norcup’s offending behavior and reducing the risk of re-offending. Deputy Circuit Judge Paul Glenn expressed his concerns about the nature of the searches conducted by Norcup, highlighting the troubling terms related to illegal sexual content and bestiality. He also pointed out that Norcup had purchased applications enabling dark web access, which facilitated anonymous browsing and concealment of illegal images.

Judge Glenn criticized Norcup’s explanations during police interviews and in his pre-sentence report, describing them as ludicrous and nonsensical. Norcup claimed that he had accidentally sourced child pornography and insisted his interest was purely in gymnastics. The judge made it clear that the evidence pointed to a different reality—that Norcup sought out this material for his own gratification, indicating a disturbing attraction to children.

He further stated that if Norcup were to be sent to prison, he would serve no more than half the sentence, as he believed that community-based punishment was more effective in preventing re-offending and protecting the public. As part of his sentence, Norcup was placed on the sex offenders’ register for five years and barred from engaging in activities involving children and vulnerable adults. Additionally, he was ordered to pay costs amounting to £670, underscoring the serious nature of his crimes and the judicial system’s response to such offenses.
