NORFOLK RAPIST ANTONY MILGATE DIES FROM CANCER IN PRISON
DECEASED A former fishing bailiff named Antony Milgate, who was convicted for the brutal rape of a woman at Upwell in October 2003, has died from cancer while in prison.Milgate was sentenced to two life terms for his crimes, along with three years for false imprisonment and 18 months for theft.
The court heard that Milgate subjected his 30-year-old victim to a three-hour ordeal, during which he raped her nine times and held her captive in her home.
He had a history of previous rapes committed in 1983 and 1989.
During police interviews, Milgate admitted that he was a danger to women and stated he should never have been released.
An investigation by the Prisons and Probation Ombudsman revealed that he died aged 64 from gastric cancer that had spread, compounded by acute renal failure, at HMP Swaleside in Kent.
The report found that his death in July 2023 was due to natural causes and that he received adequate clinical care.
Milgate, who was living and working as a fishing bailiff in Upwell at the time of his attack, had pleaded guilty to his crimes.
The court also noted that the victim believed he was a repeat offender who might kill again if released, saying: 'He should not have been let out after the first time he did it, let alone the second time.
And if he was let out again, he would do it again and could go that step further and kill someone.
He should be hung.' During the attack, Milgate had bound the woman with masking tape after a night out celebrating his birthday, punched her, and held her captive for hours before she managed to escape while he was asleep.
The incident has sparked outrage over his repeated offenses and the failure of the justice system to prevent further victimization.
